Many different types of sensors can be used for flow measurements. For this discussion, think about the different factors on which the choice of a particular flow sensor will depend and discuss them.
The different factors on which the choice of a particular flow meter will depend on include accuracy, cost, flow rate range, head loss, operating requirements, maintenance, life time (Types of Fluid Flow Meters , 2003).
For most applications, cost is the most important factor, as most applications are business driven. Most of the other factors directly relate to cost, such that an increase in accuracy, range, operating requirements, or life time result in an increase in cost. A decrease in maintenance and head loss should also cause an increase in costs.
The accuracy and range are also related, and they’re usually inversely proportional if cost is kept constant; the accuracy of a sensor over a small range is expected to be higher than the accuracy of a sensor over a large range. The operational range can be the flow range the sensor is expected to measure of one fluid, or the number of fluids the sensor can reasonably gauge.
The list of operating requirements can be extensive: liquid , gaseous, or both; corrosive, acidic, or non-reactive; pipe dimensions; pure or dirty solutions; viscosity; continuous, pulsating, or random flow; temperature stability ( What to Consider When Selecting a Flow Meter, 2015). Any and all of these factors can be very limiting to the type of fluid flow sensor detection.
Head loss is simply the amount of restriction to flow the meter poses. Maintenance and lifetime can also be related, where an easier maintained flow sensor could have a higher lifetime expectancy, where the lifetime is how long the sensor is expected to provide a meaningful measurement. A device’s maintainability is also related to its user friendliness, and a non-user friendly sensor that requires an expert to service can be said to have less maintability.
